The location was a common fuel stop that doubles as a convenience store, which often leads of ending up in line customers carrying goods of slightly overpriced groceries. A terrible fate to happen when your only desire is to complete a simple refueling. Dreadful. My position was fourth among those waiting. A single employee working, a young woman. A peculiar quality in her demeanor. When the faffer at the front of the queue had at last settled for his purchases, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, It seemed to me overhearing the cashier wish him a wonderful day. Unusual. Perhaps I’d misheard, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if she could even be a comrade in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for those who delay straightforward customers such as myself. Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our line finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “have a wonderful day”. An American? At this location? The pronunciation indicated it, and few locals tells people such a cheerful phrase, or simply a good day. Quite out of place. You don’t get US citizens frequenting this area, certainly not working in petrol stations or anywhere else. Second in line at last. After an elderly lady dealing with a lengthy struggle with her basket, her groceries, her wallet and her rewards card. It went on for ever. Once completed, the woman also got told an excellent day. Clearly an American. Confirming it was possible by cracking a joke at the cashier, to observe that response their typical stare, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “You are very amusing.” Yet no idea came of a funny comment to utter. I just had to settle the genuine warmth – or a performance of it, which amounts to identical in effect – with which she looked me right in the eye, to my very core, and wished me an awesome day. My spirits lifted. A positive experience.
