A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
